Paediatric nurses are typically registered nurses who provide health care to adolescents and children. They play a special role in supporting young patients and their families by explaining patients' conditions, treatment options, and providing emotional support.
Students may choose to focus on becoming an Paediatric Nurse with expertise in paediatric primary health care and chronic illness for infants, children, and adolescents in community and clinic environments. The curriculum includes classroom and clinical experiences encompassing advanced health assessment, physiology and pathophysiology, management of common and complex health/illness conditions, family, child, and adolescent theory and development, nutrition, and advanced practice nursing role development.
There is a strong emphasis on addressing health disparities by preparing Paediatric Nurse Practitioners who have expertise to work with diverse, vulnerable, and underserved paediatric and adolescent populations.
Post Graduates of the program with a specialization in Paediatric Nursing are prepared to become leaders in the care of children across the health and illness spectrum and across institutional boundaries.
Paediatric nursing offers several career options that encompass a range of duties and responsibilities.
The responsibilities of those in paediatric nursing may vary based on work setting and specialty. In hospital settings, paediatric nurses typically document patient progress through careful record keeping, notifying doctors in the event of any changes in a patient's situation. General paediatric nurses often assist doctors by checking vital signs, drawing blood, giving vaccinations, and taking patient histories during their visits.
When working on patient care teams or within private practices, paediatric nurses may specialize in their care of children. They may also teach and educate, provide professional consultations and develop youth care programs. Even though they specialize in childcare, a pediatric nurse's responsibilities can cross into other territories regarding health of young patients. For instance, they might create at-home diet and exercise programs for obese children, educate new mothers on breastfeeding techniques or help parents deal with troubled teenagers.
